Playing After Dark presents "Not of the Ordinary"

Join Pocket Productions for an eclectic evening “Not of the Ordinary,” part of their Playing After Dark series, in downtown Columbia on Friday, June 24. Like past Playing After Dark galas, “Not of the Ordinary” will introduce the audience to unique, unsuspecting art forms beginning with the culinary genius of local legend Chef Malcolm Hudson.

A beautiful four-course meal prepared by Chef Hudson will be served as audience members discover the hidden artists harbored in the thick, sticky air of a Carolina summer night. The meal will begin at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments and horederves in the upstairs reception area of 701 Whaley St, where audience members can mingle surrounded by the evocative works of metal sculptor Mike Pope.

Dinner will be served promptly at 7 p.m. by the stage where DayClean, comprised of Marcus Thomas, on acoustic guitar and vocals and Idris Chandler, on cello, will carry audience members to another dimension with their enchanting, soulful melodies. Software engineer David Hamiter will pick the audience up from their DayClean induced trance and take them into new worlds with his one-of-a-kind digital creations.

The Columbia Marionette Theatre presents: The Little Mermaid

Mast General Store Opens in Columbia!

Mast General Store has just opened its Columbia location this morning with a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:45 am. Hundreds of excited shoppers eagerly made their way into the new store, which offers everything from outdoor goods and clothing to accessories, gifts, and candy. Today marks a new turning point for retail on Main Street and we are very excited to have Mast General here! Go check it out!

While you are in the store, take a sneak peek through the back courtyard at our new apartments opening up in August, called Lofts at Lourie's.

Mast General Store is located at 1601 Main Street, right in between Taylor and Assembly streets.

Brazilian Steakhouse coming to Main Street!

Capitol Places is proud to welcome a new restaurant to the Main Street area called Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse. It will be located in our Kress commercial space and expected to open later this summer. Traditionally named Gauchao Brazilian Steakhouse in the Myrtle Beach location, the restaurant will serve all-you-can-eat meat and the waiters come to your table to slice it for you. They will be open for lunch and dinner, which includes 17 cuts of beef, chicken, lamb and poultry, as well as a salad bar with more than 30 items.

This unique restaurant will be a prime destination for people coming to Main Street and it joins the new Mast General Store opening this month.

Capital City Music Fest and Wing Fling is back!!

The Capital City Music Fest & Wing Fling will take place on Saturday May 14, 2011 at the 1400 block of Main St. It will start at 12 pm and go until 8 pm. Tickets will be available for $5 in advance at The White Mule 1530 Main St., Loose Lucy's, Natural Vibrations, Old Towne Tavern, most restaurant vendors, and online at www.etix.com. Tickets will also be available at the gates opening at noon.

There will be a great lineup of at least 10 featured restaurants showing they're chicken wing skills, with a variety of flavors and styles. Sample size orders will be available so you can try them all!

Mingle and Jingle on Main is this Thursday!

Mingle and Jingle is the retail kickoff for the holiday season in downtown Columbia. It takes place on December 2nd (the First Thursday of the month) and is designed to highlight the businesses in the downtown corridor. The festivities include live performances by the Capitol City Playboys, Isabelle's Gift, Columbia Alternacirque, DayClean, the Mingle and Jingle Jazz Band, the Dark Dolly (living statue) and special guest Lady Chablis. And, art will be the name of the game as there will be at least five different art shows going on inside businesses up and down the street.

Participating businesses include Mac's on Main, Villa Tronco, Hennessey's, S&S Art Supply, Tapp's Center Art Project, Sammie's Deli, Army Navy Store, The Nickelodeon, Columbia Museum of Art Store, Anastasia & Friends, Free Times, Capitol Places, White Mule, Frame of Mind, City Center City Partnership, Artist in the Arcade, Uptown, and the Whig.

This month Frame of Mind wraps up FOM Series 2010 and kicks off the holiday season at the same time. Bonnie Goldberg is the featured artist of the month and what a wrap up show it will be.

Anastasia & Friends: This month, the gallery will feature paintings, sculpture and mixed media by Paul Kaufmann, Thomas Crouch, Michael Krajewski and Anastasia Chernoff, video by Jason Stroud and Delirium will return with its legendary dancing on top of the bathrooms.

The Columbia Museum of Art's Museum Shop will be open and featuring artist Steve Harrell, a skilled wood turner. His pieces are in collections throughout the United States and Europe. What a wonderful opportunity to finish your Christmas shopping: all customers will enjoy a 10% discount on selected items. Museum members will receive an additional 10%. In addition, Columbia Museum of Art t-shirts will be on sale for $5.00.

S & S Art Supply - Michael Bolin will be exhibiting works including the new large scale series - Envisage. This is a series of large scale portraits of people as they would envision themselves - producing shared interpretations of the artist and his subjects. Awesome vegetarian fare will be provided by Cabo Fresh Taco.

Studios in the Arcade - The 9 artist studios that make up Studios in the Arcade will be open for all patrons to visit.

Vista Lights is Tonight!

WHAT: The Vista's signature open house kicks off the holiday season with a night of culture, cuisine and artistic performances. More than 60 galleries, shops, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues will open their doors for the evening to showcase holiday treasures, and this year expect a little more excitement from the annual tree lighting ceremony with Mayor Steve Benjamin.

WHEN: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday, November 18.

WHERE: The Congaree Vista, with pedestrian-only traffic on Gervais Street stretching from Assembly to Gadsden; and Lincoln and Park Streets between Senate and Lady.

TREE LIGHTING: The evening's highlight is a tree-lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. at the intersection of Gervais and Lincoln streets, featuring Mayor Steve Benjamin and other local dignitaries.

MORE: Attendees can get into the spirit of the season with horse-drawn carriage rides. Many businesses offer complimentary refreshments, which guests can enjoy while visiting them.

BRING YOUR SOCKS: Fabric artist Susan Lenz will be collecting socks for her artwork called "Find a Mate," a community art project to educate the public about art quilts. You'll be able to try your hand at creating, and if you bring a sock---children or adult; serious or comic---you may discover it in the final quilt, which will be unveiled at Artista Vista in April 2011.

THIS SEASON: Vista Studios/Gallery 80808 will host a special anniversary show to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Attendees will enjoy carols by several local groups, and the entire Vista will be decorated in lights.

Residents Social will take place at Tapp's this month

We will be hosting our Residents Social in conjunction with the Tapp's Art Project this month. It will occur on November 4th, from 5-9 pm, at 1644 Main Street. We will be handing out free drink passes for the residents from 5:30-7:30 pm.

Join us at Tapp’s to meet artists, view original artwork and enjoy live demonstrations and local music. This month The White Mule will be providing food and a cash bar! We are excited to join Frame of Mind, S&S Art Supply, Columbia Museum of Art and others in this rapidly growing, creativity-filled event series. Our first event at Tapp’s on October 7th was fantastic! We hope that was only the first of many artful events to come!...

This month we will “Reveal” the Window Installation Series! Local artists, art groups and businesses will use the Tapp’s windows to create a unique installation of their artwork. This month featured in the exterior windows are Susan Lenz, Amanda Ladymon, Molly Harrell, Mathew John, Amy Windland, Kimberly Bookman, Porter Dodd, Sandra Carr, Southern Pottery and Corley Mill Artists Group. And in the interior windows are Pat Stone, Jefferson Vimana, Alex Smith, Half Moon Pottery and Nancy Kauffman. The windows will remain on display for two months to promote the Tapp’s Window Installation Series and the participating artists.

Other exhibiting artists include: Whitney Lejeune, Jamie Blackburn, Ellin Baskin, Charlotte Lindsey Gaskins, Carolyn McLaughlin, Jean Bourque, Vanessa Bussey, JJ Casey, Cheryl Coble, Brenda Schwarz Miller, Sam Compton, Carol Anderson, Tam Hicks, Jennifer Ghelardini, Benira Sutphin, Val Zaba, Sue Shrader, Rachel Thomason, Howard Hunt, Carolyn Cobia, June Tucarella, Bryce Dixon and Rachelle Brundage.
Also, outside in the “Plein Air Studio” at Tapp’s Plaza get a live view of a clay sculpture demonstration by John Sharp ad a wood turning demonstration by Kirk Miller. Inside Carolyn McLaughlin will be demonstrating “gourd-burning”.

Frame of Mind's Art Series is back in November

Michael Krajewski. Need we say more? Be ready for a wild ride and expect the unexpected. We will be presenting all things Krajewski, from drawings and paintings to photowork to music videos from his new band Snowman & the Pitch (who happen to have some garage tapes being released very soon). We also are going to mix up the outdoor stage with a combo of street performers. Tribe SK, VerseWorks, and Fire In Motion are all collaborating on a show designed to keep your attention and knock you on your butt. And all of this is sponsored by Gervais and Vine, who will be on hand with some fabulous wines for your tasting pleasure.

Anastasia & Friends will have an exhibit that features a group exhibition of sculpture, paintings and mixed media by Claude Buckley, Sean Williams, Roger Hutchison and Anastasia Chernoff. Also, the gallery is collaborating with ETV for one of their Carolina Stories’ documentaries about legendary advertising savant, Elliott White Springs. His provocative advertising slant is said to have changed the entire approach of the country’s advertising industry. Dana McCullough, from ETV, will present some of Springs art and artifacts during the opening and thus will be providing a sneak peek at some of the work that is in the documentary airing on Thursday, Nov. 18th at 9 pm on SCETV.

S&S Art Supply presents FITE KLUB’S FIRST ANNUAL 80′S BABIES POST HALLOWEEN GALLERY BASH! Visuals are provided by FITE KLUB STUDIOS and will broken down into 4 categories of 80′s pop culture, TV SHOWS, FILM, CARTOONS, and VIDEO GAMES. 80′s music will be provided by DJ PRINCE ICE and food by Cabo Fresh Taco. And since it’s a post Halloween bash…that doesn’t mean the costumes should go back to the store…come out dressed in your best (or most ridiculous) 80′s attire.

The Columbia Museum of Art’s Museum Shop will be open and featuring the art of Clay Burnette.

Studios in the Arcade – The 8 artist studios that make up Studios in the Arcade will be open for all patrons to visit. Take the opportunity to stop in and speak with the artist in their space and get a feel for exactly who the artists are.

And last but not least, Villa Tronco will continue with its popular Opera Night this week.

This year, your romantic holiday can still be meaningful and enjoyable without breaking your wallet. Here are some helpful ideas to enjoy being with your significant other while still maintaining a budget:

• Instead of going out to dinner and paying extra for set Valentine’s Day menus, cook dinner at home together and celebrate with a bottle of wine.

• Instead of going to the movie theater, rent one of your favorite movies and watch it in the comfort of your own home.

• Instead of spending lots of money on lavish gifts, try simple ideas to show that you care such as writing down the things you love about the other person or presenting them with a coupon book filled with things you promise to do for them.

• If you are not a writer, revert back to the old phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words” and present them with a collage of your favorite photos together or a framed picture.

It does not matter how you decide to express your feelings for the other person, as long as you realize it does not have to cost you a fortune.

City Center Partnership’s Hospitality Team Services

You may have noticed the Team of Yellow Shirts patrol the Main Street area. We want to make sure you understand how much they do for this area and how you can utilize their services.

The Yellow Shirts provide a free shuttle service that runs throughout a 36 block area from Elmwood Avenue to Gervais Street, and from Marion Street to Assembly Street. You can call them from 8 am to 11 pm and they will meet you wherever you are and take you wherever you need to go within this area. Their daytime phone number is 803-233-0620 and 803-309-7758 at night.

The whole team works to keep the area clean and attractive by removing litter and graffiti, landscaping work, planting flowers, and pressure washing. They are also available to disseminate safety information to visitors and residents as well as report any potential threats to the district.

These guys do a wonderful job keeping our neighborhood clean and safe. Please feel free to call them day or night if you need a ride in the area or even just an escort back to your apartment.

Kick start the New Year!

We may not be able to help you with all of your New Year’s resolutions, but we can certainly recommend where to go if you have promised yourself to lose weight and get in shape!

You should know by now that Brick House Gym is accessible for our residents and is located just five minutes away off Blossom and Huger Streets. The gym features 12,000 square feet of fitness area and has plenty of different machines and cardiovascular equipment for you to try out. Locker rooms are provided so you can go straight to and from work.

Whether you prefer to work out alone or in a group, there are multiple options for every client. You can indulge in individual performance training sessions with one their talented personal trainers and take on kettle balls, boot camps, and agility training.

For just $13 a month, our residents can participate in any of these available classes ranging from yoga and Pilates to circuit training and battle ropes. There are over 100 of these classes offered each month that you can sign up for and look over the availabilities at their front desk.

Ryan Sacko, one of their gifted fitness leaders, happens to live in one of our buildings and directs personal performance training. He is currently offering a special holiday package where you can buy 10 sessions and get 2 free or buy 5 sessions and get 1 free. He also offers expanded member’s classes such as:

Spinning classes: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm
Performance Circuit: Full body workout, Mondays at 6pm
Yoga: Wednesdays at 6:30pm and Saturdays at 9am as well as Sundays at 4pm

You can also do a short-term intense training program through one of the non-expanded member’s classes such as Battle Ropes, which details 3 months of training for $500. These classes start on January 4th and there will be open enrollment from the 4th until the 15th. If you are not sure about which class to sign up for you can always try the first class for free and see how you respond to it. We encourage you to make use of the services Brick House provides no matter what your motivation happens to be. A fleeting New Year’s idea could turn into a long term relationship with a Pilates or spin class. If you do not take an interest in the classes, head down there to work out on the weights or cardio machines and kick start the New Year!

Shop Proud, Shop Columbia

This is a new campaign dedicated to bringing awareness to Columbia citizens and encouraging them to think before they shop in other cities or online. You will be surprised to find that most everything you need can be found right here in Columbia!

Know your facts: If each employed person in the Columbia area spent $100 each month in a retail business, it would generate more than $32 million in revenue. Based on a study commissioned by the Andersonville (Chicago) Development Corporation and Chamber of Commerce, for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, marketing, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain located in our community, at least $43 stays in the local area. Spend it in another city or online and nothing comes home.

There are many unique and exciting locally-owned businesses right in the downtown area. Explore areas such as Devine Street, the Vista, and Five Points. Think before you shop.
